How to Set Up Your Ledger Wallet: Complete Beginner's Guide

Just got your Ledger? This guide walks you through the complete setup process — from unboxing to receiving your first crypto. The process takes about 15 minutes.

Before You Start

Make sure your Ledger was purchased from an online retailer or directly from Ledger. The device should arrive in factory-sealed packaging. If the package shows signs of tampering, do not use the device.

You'll need: - Your Ledger device - A computer or smartphone - The USB-C cable included in the box - A pen to write down your recovery phrase - 15-20 minutes of uninterrupted time

Step 1: Download Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the companion app for your hardware wallet. Download it from the official Ledger website for your platform:

  • Desktop: Windows, macOS, or Linux
  • Mobile: iOS or Android

Important: Only download Ledger Live from ledger.com. Never install apps from third-party sources.

Step 2: Connect and Power On

Connect your Ledger to your computer using the USB-C cable. The device will power on and display a welcome message.

  • Nano S Plus / Nano X: Use the two buttons on top to navigate
  • Flex / Stax / Gen5: Use the touchscreen to navigate

Select "Set up as a new device."

Step 3: Choose Your PIN

Create a PIN code of 4-8 digits. This PIN protects your device from unauthorized physical access.

Tips: - Don't use obvious PINs like 1234 or 0000 - Don't use your birthday or phone number - Memorize it — there's no "forgot PIN" option - After 3 wrong PIN attempts, the device resets

Step 4: Write Down Your Recovery Phrase

This is the most critical step. Your Ledger will display a 24-word recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase). This is the master backup of all your crypto accounts.

Write every word down on the Recovery Sheet included in the box. Double-check each word.

Rules for your recovery phrase: - Never store it digitally (no photos, no notes apps, no cloud storage) - Never share it with anyone — Ledger will never ask for it - Store it in a secure physical location (safe, safety deposit box) - Consider a metal backup (Cryptosteel) for fire/water protection

Step 5: Verify Your Recovery Phrase

Your Ledger will ask you to confirm several words from your recovery phrase to verify you wrote them down correctly. Select the correct words when prompted.

Step 6: Install Apps in Ledger Live

Open Ledger Live and follow the setup wizard. It will: 1. Check your device is genuine 2. Update firmware to the latest version 3. Let you install apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to use

Install the apps you need (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.) and create accounts for each.

Step 7: Receive Your First Crypto

To receive crypto: 1. Open Ledger Live → select the account → click "Receive" 2. Verify the address on your Ledger's screen 3. Copy the address and send crypto to it from your exchange

The funds will appear in Ledger Live once the transaction is confirmed on the blockchain.

You're Done

Your crypto is now secured by the Secure Element chip in your Ledger. Your private keys never leave the device. Even if your computer is compromised, your funds are safe.

Welcome to self-custody.
