Passphrase vs PIN: Advanced Ledger Security
The PIN protects physical device access. The passphrase (25th word) creates entirely separate accounts from the same seed.
The PIN
4-8 digits. Device wipes after 3 wrong attempts. Prevents unauthorized physical use.
The Passphrase
Optional addition to your 24 words. Creates a completely different set of addresses. Not stored on device.
Use Cases
- Plausible deniability: Decoy wallet with small balance; real funds behind passphrase
- Extra security: Even if seed is compromised, passphrase wallet remains hidden
- Multiple wallets: Different passphrases for different purposes
Critical Rules
- Never forget it: There is no recovery. No support ticket, no password reset
- Store separately from seed: Defeats the purpose if both are compromised
- Use 20+ random characters: Short passphrases are vulnerable to brute force
- Test recovery before loading significant funds
